How to Use
- Measure foot circumference at the widest part of the foot (around the ball of the foot).
- Socks should have about 10% negative ease for a snug, non-slipping fit.
- The heel flap is worked on half the total stitch count.
- See the Heel Turn Calculator for the complete heel turn sequence.
- See the Toe Decrease Calculator for decreasing to the toe.
Results are estimates. Gauge, yarn, and needle type affect actual results.
About this Sock Size Calculator
Sock sizing is based on actual foot measurements combined with the negative ease built into the pattern — hand-knit and crocheted socks are typically made slightly smaller than the actual foot, since the stretch of the fabric provides a snug, supportive fit.
Foot length and gauge both matter
Sock size depends on both foot length (for toe-to-heel shaping) and gauge (for the stitch count around the foot's circumference). Getting gauge right matters even more for socks than many other projects, since the fabric needs to stretch appropriately without being too loose or too tight around the foot.
