Yarn Substitution Helper

Compare your original yarn and substitute to check compatibility before you start your project.

Original Yarn
Substitute Yarn

This tool provides general guidance only. Always swatch with your substitute yarn before starting any project.

How to Use This Tool

  • Fill in the details for your original yarn (from the pattern) and your substitute yarn.
  • Click Compare Yarns to see a compatibility checklist and overall substitution rating.
  • A rating of Good means 3–4 factors match. Fair means 2 match. Risky means 0–1 match.

Key Substitution Factors

  • Weight: The most important factor. Mismatched weights require significant pattern adjustments.
  • Gauge: Even with matching weight, different yarns can knit/crochet at different tensions. Always swatch!
  • Fiber: Affects drape, warmth, care, and behavior. A cotton substitute for wool will drape differently and won't felt.
  • Care: If the finished item will be machine washed but the substitute requires hand washing, reconsider.

About this Yarn Substitution Helper

Substituting a different yarn than a pattern calls for is common, but a successful substitute needs to match more than just the weight category label — gauge, total yardage, fiber content, and drape all affect whether the swap actually works for the intended project.

What to check before swapping yarns

Compare total yardage needed (not just skein count), confirm the substitute can hit the pattern's target gauge with a reasonable hook or needle size, and consider fiber content — a plant fiber like cotton behaves very differently from an animal fiber like wool even at the same weight. See the yarn weight guide for the complete substitution framework.
