⚠️ US and UK patterns are NOT interchangeable without converting all stitch names. Always check which system a pattern uses before starting.
Why US and UK crochet terms differ
US and UK crochet use the same stitch techniques but different names. A US double crochet is the same stitch as a UK treble crochet — but the abbreviations are completely different. Using a UK pattern with US assumptions (or vice versa) will produce the wrong fabric height and gauge.
Common uses
- Identify whether a pattern is written in US or UK terms
- Convert a UK pattern to US terms before crocheting
- Paste a full pattern row and convert all abbreviations at once
Tip: US patterns often say "sc" for single crochet. UK patterns often say "dc" for the same stitch. If a pattern uses "dc" but seems to produce very short stitches, it may be a UK pattern.
