Why US and UK Terms Differ

US and UK crochet terminology evolved separately, leading to the same words meaning different stitches. The confusion most often trips up crafters when a pattern calls for "double crochet" — in the US that is a medium-height stitch (yarn over once), while in the UK it refers to what Americans call single crochet.

Always check your pattern's country of origin or look for a terminology key at the top of the pattern. If in doubt, check whether the pattern uses "sc" (likely US) or "dc" for the shortest standard stitch (likely UK).

Results are estimates. Verify conversions against your pattern's stitch key.
