Panel Overview
- Front & Back panels: The main body of the bag (2 pieces).
- Bottom strip (gusset): Only needed when you enter a depth > 0. Creates a box base.
- Straps: Cut 2 pieces. Fold in thirds or use interfacing for structure.
- Lining: Usually the same dimensions as the outer shell minus seam allowances for ease.

About this Tote Bag Fabric Calculator
A tote bag's fabric needs come from four separate pieces that don't all scale the same way: the front and back panels grow with bag size, the gusset only exists at all once you enter a depth above zero (a depth of 0 means a flat bag with no box bottom), and the straps are sized independently by their own width and length settings, not by the bag's dimensions.
Lining fabric is listed separately for a reason
Lining is broken out as its own yardage line because many totes skip it, or use a leftover fabric instead of buying more — turning it off changes the total yardage but not the cutting dimensions for the outer shell. Note that interfacing or stabilizer, if your pattern calls for it, isn't included in this total since the amount needed varies by product and bag structure.
