How to Use This Estimator

  • Select your shawl shape — triangle, rectangle, semicircle, or crescent.
  • Enter the wingspan (widest edge) and depth (from top edge to bottom point or hem).
  • Select yarn weight and stitch type. Lace patterns use more yarn per area than stockinette.
  • Click Estimate Yardage to get your estimate in yards and meters.

Shape Notes

  • Triangle: Area calculated as ½ × wingspan × depth.
  • Rectangle: Area = wingspan × depth.
  • Semicircle: Area = ½ × π × r² where wingspan = diameter.
  • Crescent: Approximated as 60% of a semicircle of the same wingspan.
