Quilt Binding Calculator
Calculate binding strips and yardage for finishing your quilt.
How to Use
- Enter your finished quilt width and length in inches.
- Choose your binding strip width (2.5" is the most common).
- Select your usable fabric width.
- Click Calculate Binding to see strips and yardage.
The Formula
Perimeter = (Width + Length) × 2
Total binding needed = Perimeter + 12" (for joins and corners)
Number of strips = Total binding ÷ Fabric width (rounded up)
Yardage = (Strips × Strip width) ÷ 36" + seam allowance
Double-Fold vs. Single-Fold Binding
Double-fold (most common): Strip is folded in half lengthwise before sewing. Provides a neat, durable edge. Use 2.25"–2.5" strips. Finished binding is about 1/4"–3/8" wide.
Single-fold: Strip is pressed with folded edges and sewn down flat. Use 1.5" strips for a narrow binding or 2" for wider.
