About this Ovulation Calculator
Ovulation timing estimates are based on average cycle patterns, and actual timing can vary meaningfully from cycle to cycle even for the same person, which is why these estimates work best as a general planning window rather than a precise prediction.
How the estimate is calculated
For a typical 28-day cycle, ovulation is estimated to occur around day 14, counting from the first day of the last period. For cycles that run longer or shorter than 28 days, the estimate shifts proportionally — ovulation generally occurs about 14 days before the next period starts, regardless of total cycle length.
The fertile window
The fertile window extends a few days before ovulation through the day of ovulation itself, since sperm can survive in the body for up to 5 days while an egg is viable for about 12–24 hours after release. This is why the fertile window is calculated as a range rather than a single day.
Why cycle length varies the estimate
Not everyone has a textbook 28-day cycle, and cycle length can vary from month to month for the same person due to stress, illness, and other factors. Tracking actual cycle length over several months, rather than assuming a fixed 28-day pattern, produces a more personalized and reliable estimate than a single generic calculation.
