Knitting Gauge Swatch Calculator
Measure your swatch, get your gauge, and adjust your cast-on count to match any pattern.
Enter your swatch measurements to calculate your gauge.
How to Use This Calculator
Measuring Your Swatch
- Knit a swatch at least 6"×6" using your project yarn and needles in the stated stitch pattern.
- Wash and block the swatch before measuring — many yarns change size significantly after washing.
- Place the swatch flat. Measure from the center, avoiding the edges (which are less accurate).
- Count stitches and rows within a 4" area for the most accurate result.
Adjusting for a Pattern
- Patterns state gauge as "X stitches over 4 inches" — enter that in the Pattern Gauge field.
- Enter your swatch gauge in the Your Gauge field.
- Enter either the pattern's cast-on count or your desired finished width.
- The calculator will tell you how many stitches to cast on to achieve the correct size.
What the Percentage Difference Means
- 0%: Your gauge matches exactly — use the pattern as written.
- +5% or more: Your gauge is tighter — try one needle size larger.
- -5% or more: Your gauge is looser — try one needle size smaller.
- Differences over 10% may affect drape and fabric quality even after adjustment.
Results are estimates. Gauge, yarn, and needle type affect actual results. Always swatch before starting a garment.
