About ease in knitting
Ease is the difference between your actual body measurement and the finished garment measurement. Positive ease means the garment is larger than your body — it hangs loosely. Negative ease means the garment is smaller — it stretches to fit and clings to the body.
Common uses
- Find the finished measurement to target when choosing a pattern size
- Compare ease across different fit styles before casting on
- Understand why a pattern might be knit in a size larger than your measurements
Always check a pattern's schematic for the finished measurements and compare to your body measurements plus desired ease before choosing your size.
