Grams to Yardage Estimator
Estimate how many yards are in a ball of yarn based on its weight and yarn category.
Yards-per-Gram Reference

Ranges are approximate. Fiber content, plying, and brand affect actual yardage.
How to Estimate Yardage from Grams
Every yarn weight category has a typical yards-per-gram (yd/g) ratio. By weighing your yarn and knowing the category, you can estimate how much yardage you have — perfect for mystery skeins, inherited yarn stashes, or unlabeled balls.
- Use a kitchen scale to weigh your yarn in grams.
- Identify the yarn weight by wrapping it around a ruler and counting wraps per inch (WPI).
- The result is a range — use the lower end for planning to be safe.
These are estimates. Actual yardage may vary. For precision, wind and measure a length of yarn with a niddy noddy or yarn swift.
