Gauge Calculator

Calculate your gauge from a swatch, or adjust your stitch count to match a pattern gauge.

Measure your gauge swatch and enter the values below.

How to Use the Gauge Calculator

Calculate Gauge Tab

  • Knit or crochet a swatch of at least 4"×4" (10×10 cm) in the stitch pattern you plan to use.
  • Count the number of stitches and rows within a measured area.
  • Enter those counts and the measured dimensions to get your gauge.

Adjust for Pattern Tab

  • Enter the gauge from the pattern (usually listed as "X sts over 4 inches").
  • Enter your actual gauge from your swatch.
  • Enter the pattern's cast-on number or the width you want.
  • The calculator will tell you how many stitches to cast on so your project comes out the right size.

Tips

  • Always wash and block your swatch before measuring — many yarns change size after washing.
  • Measure from the center of your swatch, not the edges, for the most accurate result.
  • If your gauge is tighter than the pattern (more stitches per inch), try a larger needle or hook.
  • If your gauge is looser (fewer stitches per inch), try a smaller needle or hook.

About this Gauge Calculator

Gauge is the number of stitches and rows it takes to make a specific measurement, usually a 4-inch square, and it's the single most important number in a pattern for getting the finished size right. This calculator compares your actual measured gauge against a pattern's target and works out how many stitches to cast on or chain to hit the correct finished size at your own tension.

Why gauge, not needle size, determines fit

Two people using the exact same needle size and yarn can produce noticeably different gauges because of differences in tension. This is exactly why patterns specify a target gauge rather than just a needle size — the needle size on the label is a starting suggestion, not a guarantee. For the full swatching process, including how to swatch correctly and what to do when your gauge doesn't match, see the gauge swatching guide.
