Working Across Measurement Standards

U.S. patterns typically state gauge per 4 inches; U.K. and many European/metric patterns state it per 10 centimeters. These are not the same distance (10cm ≈ 3.94in), so treating them as interchangeable without conversion produces the wrong result.

About this Gauge Calculator

Gauge is the number of stitches and rows it takes to make a specific measurement — conventionally 4 inches in U.S. patterns, or 10 centimeters in many metric/U.K. patterns — and it's the single most important number in a pattern for getting the finished size right. This calculator is intentionally craft-neutral (it works the same way whether you knit or crochet) and intentionally unit-flexible: it converts between the two gauge standards internally, so a swatch measured in one system can be compared directly against a pattern written in the other.

Two people using the exact same needle size and yarn can produce noticeably different gauges because of differences in tension. This is exactly why patterns specify a target gauge rather than just a needle size — the needle size on the label is a starting suggestion, not a guarantee.
