Gather Ratio Calculator
Find cut length from finished size (or vice versa) and get total fabric yardage for ruffles and gathers.
Enter your desired finished (gathered) length to find how much fabric to cut.
Results are estimates. Always add extra for shrinkage, mistakes, and pattern matching.
How to Use the Gather Ratio Calculator
Finished → Cut Length: Enter the finished (gathered) measurement you need — for example, to gather a skirt waistband that is 30" around, enter 30. The calculator tells you how long to cut the fabric strip before gathering.
Cut Length → Finished: If you already have a fabric strip cut, enter that length and ratio to find what finished gathered length you'll get.
Gather Ratio Guide
| Ratio | Fullness Level | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5:1 | Light | Heavier fabrics, subtle effect | Cut 1.5× the finished length |
| 2:1 | Standard | Most fabrics, skirts, sleeves | Cut 2× the finished length |
| 2.5:1 | Full | Ruffles, light cotton, voile | Cut 2.5× the finished length |
| 3:1 | Very Full | Ruffles on light fabrics | Cut 3× the finished length |
Important: Heavier fabrics (denim, canvas, velvet) need a higher ratio for the same visual fullness because they don't compress as easily. Lightweight fabrics like chiffon or lawn achieve excellent fullness at 1.5:1 or 2:1.
