Flying Geese Calculator
Calculate cutting sizes for flying geese blocks — standard and 4-at-a-time methods.
A flying geese unit is always 2× as wide as it is tall. Enter your desired finished width and height.
Common Flying Geese Sizes Reference
| Finished W × H | Center Rectangle (Std) | Corner Squares (Std) | Large Square (4-at-a-time) | Small Squares (4-at-a-time) |
|---|
How to Use the Flying Geese Calculator
- Enter the finished width (the long horizontal measurement) and finished height (the short vertical measurement) of your flying geese unit.
- Note: Traditional flying geese are always 2:1 ratio (width is twice the height), but this calculator works for any proportions.
- Enter the number of flying geese units you need for your project.
- Click Calculate to see cutting sizes for both methods.
Cutting Formulas
- Standard method — Center rectangle: (Finished Width + 0.75") × (Finished Height + 0.75")
- Standard method — Corner squares: Finished Height + 0.875" (cut 2 per unit)
- 4-at-a-time — Large square: Finished Width + 1.25"
- 4-at-a-time — Small squares: Finished Height + 0.875" (cut 4 per large square)
Which Method to Choose?
- The standard method is more accurate and easier for beginners.
- The 4-at-a-time method is faster for making many geese and produces no waste triangles, but requires careful pressing and trimming.
