Floss Usage Estimator

Calculate how much embroidery floss you need and how many DMC skeins to buy.

How Floss Usage Is Calculated

Each cross-stitch requires thread to cover both diagonal legs of the X. The formula used here:

Length = stitches × 2.5 × (1/count × 2) × strands × buffer

Where 1/count × 2 converts stitch count to inches of fabric covered (each stitch covers two thread lengths at that count), and 2.5 is an empirical factor for thread travel and thread tension.

DMC Skein Size

A standard DMC skein is 8 meters = 314 inches. One skein typically covers 200–400 stitches depending on count and strands.

Tips

  • Use 2 strands on 14-count Aida for standard coverage.
  • Use 1 strand on 18-count or 22-count for finer work.
  • Use 3 strands on 11-count for fuller coverage.
  • Always buy one extra skein of each color — dye lots can vary.
  • Add 20% buffer (already included) for thread starts, ends, and tension.

Note

This is an estimate. Actual usage varies with your stitching tension, the direction you work, and whether you use a loop start method.
