Filet Crochet Grid Calculator
Calculate your grid size and foundation chain from finished dimensions and gauge, then plan your design with an interactive grid.
Size Calculator
Interactive Design Grid
Click cells to toggle filled (block) / open (mesh) squares. Max 20×20. Use to sketch your design before charting.
Filled (block stitch)
Open (mesh stitch)
Set dimensions and click Build Grid to start designing.
How to Use
- Enter your desired finished dimensions and mesh gauge to calculate grid size and foundation chain.
- Use the Interactive Grid to click cells and sketch out a design — filled cells = block stitches, open cells = mesh stitches.
- Invert the grid to swap all blocks and open squares at once.
Filet Crochet Foundation Chain Formula
Standard dc mesh: foundation chain = (grid squares × 3) + 5
- Each mesh square = ch 2, 1 dc (3 sts per square)
- Add 5 for the turning chain setup at the start
- First row: dc in 8th ch from hook, then repeat (ch 2, skip 2, dc) across
Typical Filet Gauges
| Thread / Yarn | Squares/inch |
|---|---|
| Size 10 thread | 6–8 |
| Size 3 thread | 4–5 |
| Fingering yarn | 3–4 |
| Sport / DK | 2–3 |
| Worsted | 1.5–2 |
Results are estimates. Actual results vary by gauge, tension, yarn, and hook size.
