Fabric Shrinkage Calculator
Estimate post-wash dimensions and plan how much extra fabric to buy.
Enter your pre-wash dimensions to find estimated post-wash size.
Results are estimates. Always add extra for shrinkage, mistakes, and pattern matching. Pre-wash all fabric before cutting.
How to Use the Fabric Shrinkage Calculator
Pre-wash → Post-wash mode: Enter the dimensions of your fabric before washing and select the fabric type. The calculator will estimate how much it will shrink, giving you the expected dimensions after washing.
Reverse mode: If you know the finished size you need, enter that size and the calculator will tell you how much fabric to buy before washing to ensure you end up with enough.
Shrinkage Rates by Fabric Type
| Fabric | Shrinkage Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cotton | 3–5% | Most common; shrinks more on first wash |
| Linen | 3–4% | Pre-washing recommended |
| Wool | 5–10% | Use the average unless felting is desired |
| Polyester | <1% | Very stable; minimal shrinkage |
| Silk | 2–3% | Dry clean or cold hand wash |
| Rayon | 5–10% | Can be significant; always pre-wash |
| Bamboo | 3–5% | Similar to cotton |
Tip: The calculator uses the average of the shrinkage range. Wash temperature, drying method, and weave tightness all affect actual shrinkage.
