Cross-Stitch Grid Calculator

Find your pattern center, divide into sections, and calculate finished size at any count.

How to Find Your Pattern Center on Fabric

  1. Fold the fabric in half vertically (top to bottom) — the fold is the horizontal center line.
  2. Fold in half again horizontally (left to right) — the intersection of the two folds is the center of the fabric.
  3. Mark the center with a water-soluble pen or basting thread.
  4. Count out from the center to place your first stitch using the center coordinates shown above.

Odd vs. Even Stitch Counts

Odd width/height: There is a single center stitch. For example, a 141-stitch-wide pattern: center = stitch 71.

Even width/height: The center falls between two stitches. For example, a 140-stitch-wide pattern: center is between stitches 70 and 71. Start your first stitch slightly left of center.

Dividing Into Sections

Large patterns are easier to work in sections. Quarters divide the pattern into four equal areas — work one quarter at a time. Ninths divide into a 3×3 grid — work from the center outward.

Finished Size Formula

Finished size (inches) = stitch count ÷ fabric count. Example: 140 stitches ÷ 14-count = 10 inches.

Print/Scale Reference

When printing a pattern, check that 10 pattern squares = 1 inch on the printed page if you want a 1:1 reference. Adjust your printer's scale setting accordingly.
