About Crochet Chart Symbols

Crochet charts use standardized symbols to represent stitches visually. Each symbol depicts the shape of the finished stitch. Charts are read from bottom to top; rows alternate direction (right to left, left to right) while rounds are read counterclockwise.

US vs. International Symbols

Most modern patterns follow international symbol conventions (as used by Craft Yarn Council), but older patterns and some publishers may use different symbols. The term names also differ between US and UK — a US "single crochet" = UK "double crochet."
