How Crochet Circle Increases Work

A flat crochet circle is formed by increasing the stitch count by the same number every round — equal to the starting stitch count. This keeps the circle flat rather than curving into a sphere or cup shape.

  • Round 1: Work the starting stitches into a magic ring (e.g., 6 sc into ring).
  • Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch (doubles the count).
  • Round 3+: Alternate single crochets with increases (inc = 2 sc in 1 st) to add the same count each round.

The formula: each round adds N stitches (where N = starting count). Between increases, work (round number − 2) plain sc before each increase.

Gauge and yarn thickness affect the finished size. If your circle cups or ruffles, adjust your hook size.
