Pricing commission work
Commission pricing is often higher than production pricing because each piece is unique, requires back-and-forth communication, and carries the emotional weight of creating something specifically for one person. Use this calculator to build a transparent, defensible price you can explain to clients.
- Never drop below your material cost + minimum wage in labor — that is your absolute floor
- Include consultation time: even a 30-minute planning conversation is worth money
- State your revision policy clearly before starting — unlimited changes is not sustainable
- Complexity multiplier rewards expertise — a master quilter's time is worth more than a beginner's
Use this as a starting point. Market rates, local cost of living, and your experience level all affect what the market will bear.
