Cast-On Calculator

Calculate how many stitches to cast on for your desired finished width and gauge, with optional pattern multiple adjustment.

How to use

  • Enter your desired finished width — the measurement you want the finished piece to be.
  • Enter your gauge — check your swatch! Gauge is stitches per inch (or cm).
  • If your pattern requires a specific multiple (e.g., "multiple of 6"), enter it in the Pattern Multiple field.
  • The calculator shows the exact count and adjusted counts for common multiples.

Tip: Always knit a gauge swatch before starting a project. An accurate gauge is the most important factor in getting the right finished size.

Finished dimensions may vary based on blocking, yarn fiber, and tension. These are estimates based on gauge.

About this Cast On Calculator

The number of stitches to cast on is calculated directly from your gauge and the desired finished width — get gauge wrong, and the cast-on count that should produce (say) a 20-inch-wide piece will produce a different width instead, regardless of how accurately you follow the rest of the pattern.

The basic formula

Cast-on stitches = desired width in inches × stitches per inch (from your gauge swatch). This is why swatching before casting on for a fitted project matters so much — the cast-on number in a pattern only produces the stated finished size at the pattern's exact target gauge. See the gauge swatching guide for the full process.
