About this Business Days Calculator

"5 business days" and "5 days" are not the same thing whenever a weekend falls in between — a common source of missed deadlines and confusion around shipping estimates, contract terms, and payment processing windows.

What counts as a business day

A business day is generally Monday through Friday, excluding Saturday and Sunday. Many contracts and shipping carriers also exclude recognized public holidays, though the exact holiday list varies by country, company, and jurisdiction — there's no single universal standard.

Worked example

Counting 5 business days starting from a Wednesday: Thursday, Friday (2 days so far), then Saturday and Sunday are skipped, then Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday complete the count — landing on the following Wednesday, a full 7 calendar days later even though it's only 5 business days.

Where this matters most

  • Shipping and delivery estimates quoted in business days
  • Bank transfers and check clearing, which typically process only on business days
  • Contract deadlines and notice periods ("payment due within 10 business days")
  • Project and legal timelines that need to skip weekends by definition
