Border Stitch Calculator
Calculate how many stitches to pick up around the perimeter of a finished piece for adding a border.
How to use
- Enter the finished dimensions of your piece (after blocking, if applicable).
- Enter your horizontal gauge (stitches per inch) and vertical gauge (rows per inch).
- Select your craft type — crochet borders typically add 3 stitches at each corner for a flat, turned corner.
- The result shows stitches for each side and the total perimeter count.
Tip: For row edges (the long sides), you generally pick up about 2 sts for every 3 rows in knitting, or 1 st per row in crochet. Adjust the row gauge accordingly or use the "rows per inch" to calculate how many stitches you'll pick up along each side.
For a knitted border, pick up the exact number calculated. For a crochet border, work sc evenly along edges and 3 sc in each corner stitch for a classic mitered corner.
Stitch pickup ratios can vary by yarn weight and pattern. These calculations are starting estimates — adjust as needed for your project.
