How Backstitch Floss Is Calculated

The formula used:

Length = (outline_inches ÷ stitch_size_inches) × 1.5 × strands

The 1.5 multiplier accounts for thread travel on the back of the fabric between stitches. Backstitch typically uses about 15–25% more floss per project compared to the main cross-stitching.

Backstitch Stitch Size

Backstitch stitch length is usually described relative to the fabric count square:

  • 1/4 square: Very fine, used for tiny detail (e.g. facial features on miniatures).
  • 1/2 square: Standard backstitch length for most outlines.
  • 1 full square: Bold outline, good for thick borders.

Measuring Outline Length

On your printed pattern, measure the total length of all backstitch lines (in inches at finished size). Add up all outlines of the same color, then run the calculator separately for each color.

Strands

Most backstitch uses 1 strand on 14-count or higher. Use 2 strands for bold outlines or on 11-count Aida.
